Matthew Machado, President
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth c/o 2019 Matthew is currently a senior at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. Matthew served as the President last year and is honored to serve as President of the MaSNA board again this year. Following graduation, he is interested in either emergency care or pediatric psychiatry. He later wants to further his education to become a nursing professor or psych/mental health nurse practitioner. Aside from nursing, his major interests include Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. He hopes to build and maintain strong connections with many professionals and students through SNA on both a national and local level. Through those connections, Matt hopes to help enact change throughout the profession of nursing. Matt is excited to be involved in MaSNA and looks forward to working with the other board members and other nursing students from around the state. |

Dong Liang Dzindolet, President- Elect

Liang is currently a junior at Worcester State’s Lillian R. Goodman Department of Nursing. This will be her second year working on the MaSNA board. Last year she served as the Population and Global Health Chair and this year she is serving as President-Elect under Matthew Machado. By working as a home health PCA for a disabled infant, Liang has developed a passion for Pediatrics or Labor and Delivery and eventually hopes to work towards her graduate degree to become a Nurse Practitioner. Outside of Nursing, she enjoys going to the gym and soaking up the sun at the beach. Liang looks forward to another exciting year making new connections and discussing current health care issues among other nursing students across the state.

Sydney Conti, Vice President

Sydney is a senior at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing. Sydney served as the Resolutions and Legislations Chair from 2016-2017 and is honored to serve as Vice President of the MaSNA board from 2017-2019. After spending time in Guatemala learning the challenges of basic medical care in rural communities and interning at a homeless shelter for women and children in Boston, Sydney has developed a strong interest in public health nursing as well as pediatrics. Recently Sydney spent several months studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain and exploring the intricacies of a healthcare system very different than our own. Sydney believes that strong leaders are important in making change and she hopes to find many role models through MASNA as well as further cultivating the skills to be a strong leader herself.

Julia Thompson, Secretary
Northeastern University c/o 2020 I am a fourth year nursing student at Northeastern University and I am so excited to serve as the Secretary of the MASNA BOD! I am also President of the NU Student Nurses’ Association after serving as Secretary for two years. I am interested in pediatric nursing and currently work as a nursing assistant in a Neonatal ICU. Outside of nursing school I am interested in singing/acting and volunteering! |
Amanda Ilaria, Treasurer Boston College c/o 2020 Amanda is currently a junior at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing. This is Amanda's first year on the board and she is honored to have been elected to the position of Treasurer. Additionally, Amanda serves as one of the Global Health University Coordinators for Boston College's chapter of GlobeMed, a public health and social justice organization and serves as a Bystander Intervention Trainer, advocating for sexual assault prevention on college campuses. Amanda hopes to stay in Boston upon graduation, and is interested in working in Labor and Delivery or in the NICU. Amanda is thrilled to be working with the MaSNA Board of Directors and other nursing students from across the state. She is excited to continue to grow her leadership and advocacy skills in an area she is passionate about and is excited to continue to work towards being a nurse leader. |
Maria Meyer, Media Chair Boston College c/o 2019 Maria is currently a senior at Boston College Connell School of Nursing. This is her third year on the MaSNA Board, serving as the Community Health Chair two years ago and as Media Relations and Webmaster for two years. She is interested in women's health and hopes to one day receive her Masters as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner or Midwife. She enjoys being outdoors and hiking in her spare time. Her other interests include volunteering at Samaritans' Crisis Hotline and mentoring girls in the Boston Public Schools through Strong Women Strong Girls Mentoring. Maria is excited to strengthen her connections with nursing students across the state and learn more about nursing leadership on the MaSNA board this year. |
Alyssa Chan, Breakthrough to Nursing Chair
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth c/o 2020 I am a third year nursing student at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. This is my first year on the MaSNA board, and I am looking forward to interacting and working with nursing students from other universities. I am excited to take on this position to be a source of outreach to my peers. My favorite part about nursing is its versatility, all while providing patient care. It allows nurses the freedom to work in various settings and individuals, and nurses can really find an area that they enjoy working. As of now, I am not sure what type of nurse I want to be, but I am hoping to find out while on clinicals, or soon after graduation. During my spare time, I enjoy traveling, volunteering, being with friends, and trying new dishes. . |

Kaitlyn McCarthy, Region Five (Boston) Chair

Kaitlyn is currently a junior at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing. This is her second year working on the MASNA board and she is excited to work with nurses from a multitude of different schools. She is interested in Global Healthcare and hopes to go on an international trip with the nursing school during her next two years at Boston College. Kaitlyn plans to pursue a career in the fields of either pediatrics or oncology. She looks forward to gaining leadership experience and furthering her communication skills, as well as forming connections through her participation in MASNA.

Michaila Kaufman, Newsletter Chair
Boston College c/o 2020 Michaila is currently a Junior at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing. This is her first year on the MaSNA board and is thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside such a terrific group of people. Michaila has a passion for pediatrics and emergency medicine and currently works as an EMT in multiple states. Outside of nursing, Michaila loves all things outdoors and also enjoys painting and drawing. Through MaSNA she hopes to strengthen her leadership skills as well as learn more ways to influence the wonderful field of nursing. |
Samantha Zick, Fundraising Chair
Worcester State University c/o 2019 Samantha is currently a Senior at Worcester State University's Dr. Lillian R. Goodman Department of Nursing. Samantha previously served as a Regional Chair working with students in the Western region of Massachusetts and now serves as the Fundraising Chair. This will be her third year working with the MaSNA board. Samantha enjoys working in all aspects of nursing but is drawn to emergency care and pediatrics. She enjoys painting, hiking and spending time outdoors in her spare time. Samantha looks forward to a wonderful year working alongside numerous nursing students who are just as ambitious as herself in enacting a change in the field of nursing as they continue on toward their degree |

Charlotte Kolada, Elections & Resolutions Chair
Boston College c/o 2021 Charlotte is currently a sophomore in the Connell School of Nursing at Boston College. She is looking forward to a great first year on the Board of Directors as the Elections and Resolutions Chair. She is especially excited to form connections with nursing students from across Massachusetts and to become more involved in her nursing education. Charlotte enjoys working with children, and she is interested in pursuing a career in pediatrics or labor and delivery. On campus, Charlotte has been involved with teaching children with disabilities how to swim, and she plans on joining a mentoring program and participating in nursing research. She is extremely passionate about the nursing field and hopes to advance her leadership and communication skills while advocating for necessary changes in the profession. |

JUDITH SHINDUL-ROTHSCHILD, Faculty Advisor
Judith Shindul-Rothschild is an associate professor at Boston College School of Nursing where she teaches psychiatric mental health nursing and health policy to undergraduate and graduate students. She is a psychiatric nurse clinical specialist and has practiced in a variety of mental health care settings. Dr. Shindul-Rothschild's research and writings have focused on the relationships between health care financing, registered nurse staffing, nurses' working conditions, and the quality of care in hospital settings.
Dr. Shindul-Rothschild is co-author of the book Aging and Public Policy: Social Control or Social Justice? She has published numerous articles on the impact of health policies on patient care and nursing practice in professional journals such as The American Nurse, The American Journal of Nursing, Advanced Practice Nursing, Best Practices and Benchmarking in Healthcare, Critical Care Nursing, Journal of Emergency Nursing, Journal of Nursing Administration, Journal of Nursing Care Quality, Journal of Nursing Education, Policy, Politics and Nursing Practice, Nursing Management, Revolution, and The Massachusetts NURSE Newsletter.
She and Suzanne Gordon, a journalist, have published articles for the public on the adverse effects of competition or market based health financing in The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, and The Nation. She has been widely quoted by the national print, television, and radio media in the United States, Australia and Canada including Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, PBS, Canadian Broadcasting Company, Australian Public Radio, The New York Times, US News and World Report, Newsweek, USA Today, Bloomberg BNA, Modern Healthcare, The Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio. In the past year, she has been invited to testify before the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission and the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Health Care Financing on Massachusetts’s laws limiting the number of patients assigned to registered nurses and the impact of registered nurse staffing on nurse sensitive outcomes.
Dr. Shindul-Rothschild is a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academy of Practice. She has served as an appointed member of the Congress on Economics in the American Nurses Association and she is a past president of the Massachusetts Nurses Association. She is currently the Faculty Advisor for the Massachusetts Student Nurse Association, a constituent of the National Student Nurse Association. She has served as a faculty representative to the Boston College Athletic Advisory Committee and is the academic advisor for many student-athletes in the William F. Connell School of Nursing.
